Tales Of The Savoy
Stories from a Glasgow Café
By Joe Pieri
Joe Pieri used to be one of Glasgow's best-known restaurateurs and ran a remarkable café in the Cowcaddens district of the city, an area which touched both the rich shopping areas like Sauchiehall Street and the slums to the north in which vast numbers of working class people lived.
His café attracted the lowlife by day but was cleared for theatre-goers in the early evening before returning to service prostitutes and villains late at night. Here, Joe witnessed all human life as it ebbed and flowed through the doors of the Savoy and it is largely from these experiences that Joe has compiled these tales.
Some of the names have been changed, but every story is true and they are remarkable insights into a part of the city and a way of life which has gone forever.
