Para Handy Sails Again
By Stuart Donald
A remarkable re-creation of one of the great comic classics – the magical, nostalgic world of Para Handy, skipper of the errant Clyde puffer Vital Spark and his motley crew, first brought to life three generations ago by Neil Munro, one of the finest writers of humourous fiction of his own, or any other age. 30 new tales by Stuart Donald are accompanied by brief 'Factnotes' with period plates which help to set the scene for the episodes. Para Handy, Dougie the mate, Sunny Jim, and Macphail the dour engineer are thus launched on a brand new series of adventures – always amusing, often laugh-aloud, especially when the irrepressible mountebank Hurricane Jack makes his guest appearances. The authenticity of the settings and characters is impeccable and the style of the telling bears an uncanny similarity to Munro's originals as his grandaughter Lesley Bratton states in her introduction: "Stuart Donald has captured an amazing amount of the elusive flavour of the original tales."
